Luke makes a good point about building long term relationships, especially with how competitive the space has become. Even if the network does not offer the best payouts, terms, etc., many affiliates tend to stay loyal if they have built a trusted relationship with the AM.

Grant does make a good point, but in the long run I lose the opportunity to make more money if a campaign bombs. It's much less likely you'll want to continue doing business.

A lot of people don't think beyond their next paycheck or this month's sales goals.

Grant - That is a GREAT point... They only see the increases in your account they don't know what you spent to get those leads... they just saw the increase so they want more... but you can't blame them as it is how they make their living.

Wendy - I agree Completely.... More of my frustrations are I have told the managers I only do X or i have no interest in promoting X at all... but its like they didn't listen and next week they send me an offer that is email only when i dont do email. (if you take notes and pay attention you can be a good AM)

A lot of networks hire Aff Managers with little/no experience. Sometimes you'll get that kitchen sink approach to promoting offers and recruiting new affiliates. Eventually they'll learn... hopefully.

More research is good. The best discovery process comes with talking to publishers. I can't count the number of times where a few phone calls and questions flowing both ways have helped double earnings. The more I know about your business and you of ours, the more money we can make.

Being a network manager, I wish there was a magic formula. All affiliates have different needs and different communication requests. What helps me is to be an active listener and really know each account - likes and dislikes. It is easier to make an educated recommendation when you really know your publishers, even if you if you do not have access to the data.

The big thing about affiliate mangers is that they want you to try everything. They get commission when you make money, but when you lose money they havent lost anything..

well i am yet to come across an affiliate manager that has been helpful.

i have just had to figure everything out myself. If i ever ask what is converting hot in PPC at the moment, i always get the same sh**y response, and a bunch of zip submits as recommendations.

I just wonder what kind of access to the network data these aff managers really have, because it seems as if they know nothing

I guess this is just for network affiliate managers. Thoughts on affiliate managers from merchants?
