I would also recommend to have some kind of server management plan in place (if you run your own servers).

Last time i went away, my server got hacked, all sites wiped. I obviously had backups, but it took a while to restore it all (from my remote location). Very costly

why does this only happen during vacations

Ian - Most of the people i use i got from requests I made on digital point, sitepoint and earners forum. There are some services and companies that do content updates. But all the people i use are individuals.

Would be interested to know more about the first point:

"1. Content - have someone to update your content sites for you. If you aren’t already having someone do this already look into it."

Who do you trust to do this, what tools do you provide them?

DB. I think planning ahead of time helps eliminate the risk. Also if you are concerned while you are on vacation you could just use adwords time scheduler and have ads only run during peak times. But setting a reasonable budget is always the way to go cause you never know when a spike in search or traffic can hit and your spend goes through the roof!

AP. thats great that you mom helps you out.

Definately having someone to look over your stuff while you're on vacation is a plus I think to keep an eye on things. My mom pretty much manages my PPC accounts now, so that's a big plus and helps me roll new tests out on different products.

When I go on vacation without internet access, I just pray that my campaigns don't act up. I have had very mixed luck. On a 3-day vacation I lost $600/day on one campaign that got out of control, but on a 9-day vacation I experience growth. I used to set my PPC campaigns to outrageous budgets ($99,999/day) to get the most clicks possible, but now I always give them some kind of ceiling to minimize the risk of any anomalies.
